Praying Through the Body in God's Loving Gaze

Our bodies often notice a feeling before we have words for it. Tight shoulders, a fluttering belly, warm cheeks, clenched hands, tired eyes, or quick breathing can become invitations to pause. A body scan is a way to pray through the body while resting in God's loving gaze.
The goal is not to force relaxation or make every uncomfortable feeling disappear. We notice what is present without calling it good or bad, and we remember that God meets us with love in every sensation.
Prepare with Choice
Each person may sit, lie down, stand, move, keep eyes open, or stop. Never use the prayer as a punishment or require it from a child who is overwhelmed. If focusing inside the body increases distress, return attention to the room: name colors, feel feet on the floor, or listen for familiar sounds.
Try This Together
Choose a comfortable posture and notice the support of the chair, floor, or ground.
Say, 'God looks at us with love.' Take one easy breath without trying to change its depth or pace.
Begin at the feet. Notice pressure, warmth, coolness, movement, tingling, or no clear sensation at all.
Move attention slowly through the legs, belly, chest, hands, shoulders, jaw, face, and head.
At each place, notice without judgment. If the body wants a stretch, movement, or different posture, respond gently.
Choose one sensation or feeling to offer to God. End by looking around the room and naming where you are now.
When Anger Is Rising
A brief body check can help a family notice early signals of anger, but it is not a demand to calm down on command. Ask, 'What is your body telling you?' and offer choices: space, water, movement, quiet, company, or help. Return to problem-solving only when everyone has enough capacity.
Wonder Together
Where did your body feel supported?
Was any place asking for movement, rest, food, water, or care?
What do you want God to hold with you?
Pray Together
God, who made and loves our bodies, meet us in every breath and sensation. Help us listen without fear or judgment. Give us wisdom to ask for the care we need. Amen.
Make It a Rhythm
Use a thirty-second body check before bedtime or after arriving home: feet, belly, shoulders, jaw, breath. Keep it optional and end with one word of gratitude.
