Imago Dei: Practicing Love for the Image of God in Others

Every person bears the image of God. Our worth does not come from intelligence, productivity, appearance, ability, behavior, age, or how easy we are to understand. Human dignity is a gift before it is an achievement.
Jesus teaches us to look at people others overlook. A family can strengthen this way of seeing through a short practice of attentive love. The goal is not to stare, force eye contact, or create a particular feeling. It is to let another person's God-given worth become more real to us.
Try the Light of Love Practice
Invite a willing partner, or choose a photograph, name, doll, mirror, or empty chair if direct attention feels uncomfortable.
Settle your body. Imagine God's love as warm light surrounding the person without changing, fixing, or demanding anything from them.
Silently say, 'You bear God's image. You are worthy of love, safety, and respect.'
Notice one gift, story, need, or mystery in the person that you may have rushed past.
Ask what honoring God's image could look like today: listen, protect, include, apologize, advocate, encourage, or make room.
For Younger Children
Use a mirror and say the child's name: 'God made you, loves you, and sees something of God reflected in you.' Then name another person and wonder how the family can treat them as precious. Let the child move, draw, or use toys while participating.
For Older Children and Teens
Discuss the messages that rank people by popularity, body, grades, money, race, disability, gender, usefulness, or agreement. Ask how belief in the image of God challenges contempt, bullying, exclusion, and the habit of reducing a person to one action or label.
Wonder Together
Whose dignity is easiest for me to overlook?
What helps me remember my own worth when I fail?
How might honoring God's image change one action today?
Pray Together
God whose image shines in every person,
open our eyes to the dignity you have given.
Keep us from ranking, using, or dismissing one another.
Teach us to protect what is precious and love as Jesus loves.
Amen.

Make It a Rhythm
Choose one recurring moment - leaving home, sharing a meal, or ending the day - to name the God-given dignity you see in one another and one way the family will protect it.
