Secret Kindness: Serving Without Being Seen

Jesus teaches his friends not to perform every good deed for an audience. The discipline of secrecy releases the need for praise, credit, repayment, or a public image of being helpful. A kindness can be a free gift shared with God alone.

With children, this practice needs careful language. Hidden service is never permission for an adult or older child to demand secrecy. Children should always tell a safe adult about touch, threats, gifts, injuries, unsafe behavior, self-harm, rule-breaking, or any request that makes them uncomfortable.

Teach the Difference

• Hidden kindness: a good deed done without seeking credit; a responsible adult may still know about it.

• Safe surprise: joyful information that will be revealed soon, such as a birthday gift.

• Privacy: personal information someone may choose not to share widely, unless safety requires help.

• Unsafe secret: something a person demands you hide because telling could get them in trouble, expose harm, or leave you afraid. Tell a safe adult.

Try Secret Kindness

Invite each person to choose one small kindness that is safe, lawful, and appropriate for their age.

A caregiver should know enough to ensure the plan is safe, even when the recipient does not know who helped.

Serve without leaving clues, keeping score, or announcing the results later.

Privately notice the desire to be thanked or discovered. Offer that desire to God without shame.

Let the practice end quietly. The family does not need to reveal who did what.

Ideas for Hidden Service

• Complete an ordinary household task without claiming credit.

• Leave an encouraging note that does not expose private information.

• Prepare a family member's place at the table.

• Give anonymously through a trusted adult or established ministry.

• Pray privately for someone while guarding their confidence.

Jesus, you see every hidden act of love. Free us from needing applause. Make us trustworthy with other people's stories. Give us courage to tell a safe adult whenever something is wrong. Amen.
