Taste and See: A Family Faith Experiment with Salt

Jesus calls his followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world. These images invite the whole body into Scripture. Children who think concretely can touch, smell, taste, compare, and wonder before adults rush to explain the metaphor.
Attentiveness slows the experience down. Instead of swallowing quickly and moving on, the family notices what a small amount of salt changes and wonders how ordinary lives can help God's goodness become easier to recognize.
Safety Comes First
Use only food already known to be safe for every participant. Check allergies, medical dietary restrictions, sodium limits, swallowing needs, and caregiver guidance. No one should be required to taste. In church or group settings, consider a non-food version unless the ministry has an approved food-allergy procedure and safe alternatives that allow full participation.
Try the Taste Experiment
Read Matthew 5:13-16 or Psalm 34:8 in the family's preferred Bible translation.
Choose a familiar safe food that can be sampled without salt and with a very small amount of salt. Keep the portions separate and clearly identified.
Look, smell, and taste slowly. People may participate by observing rather than eating.
Ask what changed. Did the salt make another flavor easier to notice? Did it become too strong?
Wonder what Jesus may want his friends to preserve, reveal, or make more noticeable in the world.
Name one small way the family can help someone experience kindness, justice, welcome, or hope this week.
A Non-Food Alternative
Compare a dim room with one safe light turned on, examine photographs of salt crystals, or smell two allergy-safe herbs without tasting. The spiritual practice is careful attention to Jesus' image, not consuming a particular food.
Wonder Together
What did the small amount of salt change?
When can too much of a good thing become unhelpful?
How might our family make God's goodness easier to notice?
Pray Together
God of every good gift, thank you for bodies that can notice your world. Make our words and actions full of grace. Help us bring kindness, courage, and hope wherever we go. Amen.
Make It a Rhythm
Let one meal each week become a noticing practice. Choose one color, texture, aroma, or flavor, savor it without judgment, and give thanks to God.
