Wondering Together about the Mystery of Faith

During Holy Communion, the church often proclaims the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. These words hold past, present, and future together. They are not a puzzle children must solve. They are a mystery the church learns to inhabit.

The Ascension story invites this kind of wondering. Jesus' friends look into the sky, receive a promise, and return to ordinary life to wait and serve.

Try This Together

1. Read Acts 1:6-11 or Luke 24:44-53 in your preferred Bible translation.

2. Go outside or sit near a window where you can see the sky.

3. Repeat slowly: 'Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.'

4. After each line, pause and notice what memory, question, image, or feeling appears.

5. Look for a cloud, star, bird, color, or movement that helps you remain in wonder.

6. End by naming one way the family can live faithfully while waiting in hope.

Hold Questions Gently

Children may ask what heaven is, where Jesus went, or what Christ's return will be like. Adults can say, 'I do not know exactly. I trust that Jesus is present and that God's future is good.' Avoid using the second coming to create fear or urgency.

• How can we live with love while we wait?

Pray Together

Risen and reigning Christ, you are present even when we cannot see you. Hold our questions, deepen our hope, and teach us to live with love. Come near and make all things new. Amen.

Make It a Rhythm

Let the acclamation become a short family prayer during Easter and Ascension. Repetition gives large mysteries a place in the household's shared language.
